Envy ~ Anna Godberson

Genre: Young Adult Fiction

Publisher: Harper Collins

405 pages

9780061345722

This review may make little sense to anyone who has not read the first two installments in Anna Godberson’s YA Luxe series. You’ve been warned.

Also, there is this: Godberson’s books fulfill, for all intents and purposes, the same place in my heart as my Friday cupcake dates with my son. We eat well all week. We go to mom and baby classes. I go to the gym and he plays on the playground. We like tofu and V8. Look here, we also like cupcakes from The Library Coffee Company.

Likewise, I am thoroughly enjoying Godberson’s little four-part series on life between the centuries in (sometimes) lavish Manhattan. It’s full of gossip and scandal and, really, I just don’t have to defend myself to you people.

Enough of this and on with the story.

For those of you have read the first two books, this, again, will make much more sense.

I didn’t realize how little I liked the second book until I finished the third. If Rumors was lacking anything, it lacked the speed and feeling that started in The Luxe and returned in Envy. I thought the series would flounder sans a few key characters from the first and second volumes but Anna managed to keep interests elsewhere.

While the same romance and intrigue abounded in the most recent book, I did find myself cringing often for the same reason I never fully loved Harry Potter: There were just too many scripted moments where I, as a reader, found myself yelling, “No! What are you thinking?!” I know it would have been far less dramatic without certain precarious situations but it did require some suspension of disbelieve in the “credulous actions” category.

All in all, though, it was a fun progression of the story. For those who have kept up with the other three books my character allegiance lies as such after this story: I adore Miss Diana, can’t stand Carolina and am bored to death by Elizabeth without Will.

BOO...as in Radley: A Literary Halloween

Robert Duvall as Boo Radley

-I love the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Forever haunted by big old creepy Boo Radley, I couldn’t overlook him or his behind-the-door presence as I thought up some spooky literary titles and images to pass on for the Halloween holiday. Keep in mind that To Kill a Mockingbird thrills much more than chills.

-If you are in it for the fun, try Brunonia Barry’s The Lace Reader. I wouldn’t call it “evocative” or “layered”, but it is perfectly fun for Halloween. Even if you are not interested, link over and see her very cool website.

-NPR puts forth a few of their choice haunted suggestions in Laura Miller’s piece, Three Hauntingly Unforgettable Literary Houses. Rebecca, The Haunting of Hill House, and House of Leaves are covered in this “houses have souls” review.

-Amazon.com’s Top-Ten-Scariest-Books carries two of the above NPR titles. Not being a reader of scary books, I might just try one of these; I am definitely intrigued.

-I haven’t read it since I was in my early teens, but The Amityville Horror plain scared the hell out of me. I couldn’t go in my basement or look at a fly the same way for years!

-Closer to home is the haunted Dream House by Valerie Laken. A graduate of the University of Michigan’s Creative Writing program, Laken’s first novel tells the story of a young couple who discover that their new historic “dream house” was the site of a domestic homicide. Laken’s novel was written after she and her husband took up residence in a similar home where a murder took place.

-The Haunted Travels of Michigan is the first book in this series written by authors Kat Tedsen and Bev Rydel. Focusing on “their investigations and research into Michigan’s most haunted locations”, this guide includes restaurants, bars, hotels and bed and breakfasts, which all claim strong paranormal activity.

* What is the scariest book you have ever read? Please feel free to comment and add your own favorite scary, creepy, eerie, or bizarre title to the list.

72 Virgins by Avi Perry ~ Book Review

72 Virgins by Avi Perry

72 Virgins is a novel about Jihad terrorism and the security agencies’ struggle to thwart its stratagem and trounce the perpetrators. Abu Musa is an Islamic Terrorist with an agenda, a ticking bomb inside the US. Arik Golan is an Israeli who tries to bring him down and pull the plug on his terror organization. Stanley Kramer is an FBI agent on a hunting mission, seeking to place both Abu Musa and Arik within his crosshairs. The FBI, the Israeli Foreign Intelligence Service—the Mossad, the US-based Iranian clandestine terror network, and the Islamic Jihad fraternity are engaged in a timeless conflict, playing out to a crescendo that comes to a head before the dramatic conclusion.

From 72 Virgins by Avi Perry

ISBN13 – 978-0-615-28051-6
ISBN 10 – 061528051X
385 pages

72 Virgins contains everything you look for in a novel:  intertwining plots, love, adventure, murder, and mystery.  Covering a topic that has been in the forefront of society since 9/11, Avi Perry gives a behind the scenes look into how a terrorist attack comes to be.

Though we meet many characters along the way, Arik Golan is the main character in this novel.  We join him as he is kidnapped and then recruited to help bring down those planning terrorist attacks against the United States.  He starts as an unwilling participant but gradually makes it his personal mission in order to exact revenge against the notorious terrorist Abu Musa.

Every intelligence agency of the world is represented in the hunt for Musa.  Small terror cells to large conspiracy groups work together to beat the good guys from closing in on them.  72 Virgins is a whirlwind adventure that ends with a bang.

I liked the premise of this novel.  The plot line is great and something not seen in many books these days.  There was enough action to keep me turning the pages, excited to see how it all turned out.  There is love and lust.  There is loyalty and betrayal.

However, I have serious issues with the technical side.  Granted I’m not a professional writer but I have read many books and have a basic understanding of novels.

Mr. Perry uses a lot of words.  Meaning, his sentences are long run-ons that make it difficult to follow.  I had to reread several paragraphs because there was just too much in it.  Descriptive words that make you feel you are in the story are great but too many can bog down a novel.  Until I got into the plot a bit more, I had a hard time making it through the first several chapters.

The writing is a bit stilted.  I feel like a few times entire sentences or paragraphs had been left out.  Characters, at times, just appeared with no explanation of how we came to know who they are.  It wasn’t throughout the book, just here and there.  Again, I had to reread a few spots because I became lost.

My last concern was the basic editing.  A few times there were changes in tense.  At the beginning of a sentence we’d be in the present tense and the author would end in the past, making me feel like I’d skipped ahead a bit.  There were a few grammatical errors as well.

All in all, this could be a great book.  As it is, it’s a good book with a great plot.  I think if the things I’ve mentioned were fine tuned, it would be a great novel.  A person who can overlook these things would have no problems falling right into Avi Perry’s story weaving.

A Study in Scarlet ~ Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Genre:  Adult Mystery

Publisher: Modern Library

160 pages

ISBN: 9780812968545

A young doctor, a Watson, if I’m not mistaken, is returning from Afghanistan, war weary and a bit ill. He finds himself in London at the end of the 19th century, looking for cheap lodgings and possibly a friend. By word of mouth, he finds himself rooming with the strangest variety of renaissance man. A young guy, as well, Mr. Holmes, I believe it is, who has a collection of habits to make Watson’s head spin. Ever the doctor, Watson sets out to come to the bottom of the bizarre goings-on of Holmesss livelihood and a friendship is born. They embark, almost immediately, on a whirlwind murder investigation involving Scotland yard and perhaps an American Mormon or two.

Even if a reader has never ventured down the shadowy and shenanigan filled road of Dolye’s best known duo, it is, by pure social lore sake, impossible to comnprehend a world before Holmes and Watson. Here, we begin, however, in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s very first story of the pair. If you’ve read the Holmes stories out of order, as I have, it’s incredible to read the first few chapters in which the two are just getting to know each other. Throughout Doyle’s later short stories, Watson continues his running commentary of Holmes and his strange habits but his initial impressions are great.

Doyle’s writing is, as always, perfect. My favorite characteristic of Doyle’s novels is Holmes’ florid, albeit scientific prose, coupled with Watson’s more pragmatic thoughts. As for the characters themselves, I think the regular reader would abhor Holmes and his apparent arrogance if he weren’t always so right. Watson begins to, at times, but is always caught off guard when Holmes and his deductive reason get the better of the situation.

A bit of warning about the middle of the book. Keep reading. The book appears to end one story and begin another but they are exactly related in the end, in true crime fashion, so don’t put it down, believing you have come to the end of one story.

Kokology

I’ve been looking for this book for so long. My friend showed it to me before he went to Dubai. I liked it so much that I made it a point to buy one. It contains tests that defines and reveals your hidden personality and attitude towards life, family, work, sex,  etc..

I took some of the tests on that book before, and it helped me to discover some qualities that I thought I don’t possess. It also gives interpretations of your dreams. Cool huh.

Unfortunately, this book is hard to find. Whenever I get the chance to go to a book store I always ask for it. But it seem that this damn book is not always available. I didn’t to go through the reservation process because I know that I might forget it and buy the book by mistake somewhere else. That’s why I just wait ’till it becomes available.

When I get a hold of this book, I will take all the tests and post the results here. Hehehe.

How the Secret Global Elite Is Using Surveillance Against You....

The Publishers review of Shadow Government by Dr. Grant R. Jeffrey.

Security cameras, surveillance of your financial transactions, radio frequency spy chips hidden in consumer products, tracking of your Internet searches, and eavesdropping on your e-mail and phone calls. Without your knowledge or consent, every aspect of your life is observed and recorded. But who is watching the watchers?

An ultra-secret global elite, functioning as a very real shadow government, controls technology, finance, international law, world trade, political power, and vast military capabilities. Those who hold power are invisible to all but a few insiders. These unrivaled leaders answer to no earthly authority, and they won’t stop until they control the world.

In Shadow Government, Grant Jeffrey removes the screen that, up to now, has hidden the work of these diabolical agents. Jeffrey reveals the biblical description of Satan’s global conquest and identifies the tools of technology that the Antichrist will use to rule the world.

Your eyes will be opened to the real power that is working behind the scenes to destroy America and merge it into the coming global government. Armed with this knowledge, you will be equipped to face spiritual darkness with the light of prophetic truth.

It's Monday! What are you reading?

I discovered It’s Monday! What are you reading?, a wonderful weekly event hosted by J. Kaye through Twitter. Basically, you list the books you’ve read in the past week, what you are currently reading and what you hope to finish this week.

Since we’ve started renoing our newly purchased house, I haven’t had a lot of time to read, so my list will be short.  But I think this is a great way to not only keep track of what I’m doing book-wise, but also check in with other readers to see what’s being read.

Books completed last week:

Frostbitten by Kelley Armstrong – The latest in her Women of the Otherworld series, it features fan faves Elena and Clay. Super read as usual from Armstrong.

Snap by Carol Snow – YA book that is best described as coming of age with a touch of mysticism. Decent read, although not one of my faves.

Currently reading:

Bad Apple by Laura Ruby- Only about ten pages in, but I think I’m going to really enjoy it.  Main character’s voice is snarky and intelligent.

The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson - Okay, been trying to read this since about May. Put it down for a couple of months, but am going to give it another go.

Books to Complete this week:

With the renos and everything still dragging on, I’ll be very happy to complete Bad Apple and The Gargoyle.

book blog: Methland by Nick Reding

“Methland: The Death and Life of an American Small Town” by Nick Reding is a closer look at the rise of illicit methamphetamine use that grew along socio-economic fault-lines propagated by the rise of financial capitalism and deregulation beginning in the late 1970’s.  Now 30 years later, there is no end in sight for the worlds most addictive home-grown drug that continues to ensnare millions of lives and render our closely held ideal of “small town life” an empty myth.  So go small towns all across America into the darkness – where politicians cater to corporate behemoths who they fear as too big to fail or just as likely to offshore to lower wage economies.  An eye-opening and heartbreaking documentary of how an addictive drug can highlight the socio-economic and political failures of a society.

American Wife Falls Flat

Divided into four addresses, American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld walks us through the corresponding seasons of Alice Blackwell’s life. From humble beginnings in rural Wisconsin to Washington, DC’s 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, we are taken on a journey which starts in uptempo earnest, but ends awash in lamentable self-discovery.

Beginning in idyllic Riley, Wisconsin, Alice lives with her mother, father, and notably liberal and eccentric grandmother, Emilie. Living the life of the stereotypical American family of the 50’s (her father holds a 9 to 5 job at Wisconsin Bank and Trust while her mother happily keeps house), Alice’s innocence and small town way of life literally come  to a screeching halt when her car hits and claims the life of a friend. This momentous event leaves Alice withdrawn and heartbroken, and left to forever contemplate the totality of the loss.

After finishing college Alice becomes an elementary school librarian.  Content with her job and living comfortably alone, her tranquil life is suddenly disrupted by one Charlie Blackwell. Like a tornado, the privileged, handsome, and charming, Charlie storms into Alice’s life, sweeping her off her feet.  After a hasty courtship and marriage, the Blackwell family ushers Alice into the elite lives of the rich and politically well-connected. While Alice navigates fresh waters, a swell of unease begins to rise as she attempts to justify living at odds with her own liberal ideology.

As Charlie climbs his way up the political ladder, Alice never imagines he will be victorious in his Republican presidential campaign. However, when he wins, Alice finds herself married to the president of the United States at one of the most turbulent times in history.  As our reluctant first lady, Alice lives a life she has never asked for nor desired.  While Charlie’s popularity among Americans wanes, Alice realizes that she is found guilty by association. It is not until she is called back to the midwest, that she regains the pieces of herself that have been chipped away over the years.

Coming out strong from the gate, Alice is a likable and sympathetic character and we merrily ride shotgun as her life unfolds. What a shame that the trip stops short of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. The colorful dialogue that first captivates us turns sour as we go from engaged reader to sounding board.

Giving voice to the antiwar movement through sympathetic characters like Edgar Franklin, one must wonder if Curtis Sittenfeld has found a literary platform to express her political sentiments. Not wanting to alienate her audience, Ms. Sittenfeld goes to great lengths to present both democratic and republican views.  As we see-saw between party lines, the reader is inundated with facts and figures, ultimately turning Alice into one of the political pundits she so despises.

Politics aside, this voyeuristic approach into the life of a first lady is insightful and intriguing. Based loosely on the life of Laura Bush (who as a teen did cause a fatal accident killing her boyfriend), Curtis Sittenfeld gamely envisions the thoughts and actions of our former first lady; something not typically considered in the shadow of the president.  Does she really have a book hidden in her lap while the president is addressing the American people?

It is clear that author Sittenfeld has moved between the worlds of the middle and upper classes.  Like Lee Fiona in Prep, Alice also gives us a glimpse into the world of affluence.  Her dialogue is rich and knowing.  From the affectations of Princeton alumni to the locations and decorum of those who “summer”, Sittenfeld has obviously spent time in such circles.

After eighth grade Sittenfeld left her home in Cincinnati, Ohio, to attend Groton, a boarding school in Groton, MA, and went on to attend both Vasser College and Stanford University. It is likely that her academic endeavors also introduced her to the social schooling of the upper classes. Though she does not conceal her appreciation of the midwest, one must assume that the east coast holds a certain siren’s song for her.

Favorite Authors: Robert A. Heinlein

The late Robert Heinlein was hugely influential in science fiction and fantasy from the 1940s to the 1980s, very nearly up until his death in 1988. While the quality of his writing may not have been as high in the last decade of his life, he remains one of the few science fiction writers who was able to break out of the SF ghetto and reach a mainstream audience.

He wrote “juveniles,” science fiction books aimed at kids. To a considerable extent, it was a cold-blooded decision because it paid better than straight SF. The juveniles included Have Space Suit—Will Travel, Farmer in the Sky, and Starman Jones, Between Planets and Podkayne of Mars, among many others. These novels featured intelligent teenagers, coping with ignorant adults and difficult situations. They usually contain carefully disguised adult themes as well, that Heinlein snuck past his unimaginative editors at Scribner & Sons.

Beginning with the controversial Starship Troopers and the seminal Stranger in a Strange Land, Heinlein broke away from the juvies. The former is controversial as a racist novel, although the protagonist is Puerto Rican, and the latter’s portrayal of love, religion, family and government has something guaranteed to offend almost any reader. Stranger remains important in influential today.

In the 1960s, Heinlein entered his most productive period. His novels, including The Moon is a Harsh Mistress with its cookbook for revolution, won Heinlein one of his four Hugo Awards. His fantasies from that period, including the short story “All You Zombies” – widely regarded as the definitive time travel story – are particularly good.

Politically, Heinlein seemed to move to the right his entire life. By the time of Farnham’s Freehold, he was pretty much a Libertarian, and never really shifted from that ground. It’s characteristic of Heinlein, though, that readers project their own politics into whatever he wrote, seeing what they want to see. But he was capable of writing truly extraordinary novels in this period, including Job: A Comedy of Justice, his take on the biblical Job, involving a look back at a much earlier and extraordinary short story, “The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag.”

After an extended period of poor health, Heinlein wrote his “Universe as Myth” Series, beginning with The Number of the Beast and ending with the pseudo biography of his mother, To Sail Beyond the Sunset. An extended mess of classic solipsism and recycled ideas, I find them pretty tedious, although they sold well enough.

From Stranger on, would often indulge himself as an author by placing a Heinlein-like character in his novels, who would pontificate, sometimes tediously, on those ideas Heinlein was espousing. Jubal Harshaw in Stranger, Prof. Bernardo la Paz in Harsh Mistress, Lazarus Long in half a dozen novels, most famously Time Enough for Love. It can amusing and irritating at the same time. There’s no question Heinlein used the device too many times. But it was one of the tools he chose to wrench science fiction from “space opera” to something approaching literature.

But even a bad Heinlein is better than much science fiction published today. He explored new ideas; he originated themes that are tropes today. In many ways, his is the standard against which other science fiction is judged. Later writers have explored ideas more thoroughly, but for the most part they are following in Heinlein’s footsteps.

Book Review: Kingdomality

A Fun Idea!

One of the most important skills anyone can learn is how to communicate effectively. One of the key components of this skill is learning how to craft your message to your listeners. Who are you speaking to? Do you know what type of person they are and what drives them? That’s what the book “Kingdomality” tries to solve. Author Sheldon Bowles with help from Richard and Susan Silvano has crafted a fun, entertaining way of looking at yourself and the people you communicate with.

The book features a fictional narrative of an out of sorts King whose kingdom is not operating so well. A wizard happens along to grant him a wish and the king asks for wisdom in leading his people. From there, the king is taken to another kingdom where he learns about the various guildhalls (base types) and the people who live in them (more precise types). The book groups twelve different personality types into the four guildhalls (three in each group) and the king learns about each by meeting the various types. Such titles as the “Black Knight”, “Dreamer-Minstrel”, “Doctor”, and “Scientist” make up the kingdom. A read of the book (or listen to the audio book) is necessary to understand more about the various types. Titles are deceptive. For instance, “Benevolent Rulers” are not necessarily the kings in this kingdom. Any of the twelve types can lead but the key is to learn who YOU are and then learn about those you work with or lead. When you do that, you can be much more successful in being productive and leading those around you. By the book’s end, the king is grasping the fundamentals and is already making a difference in his kingdom.

What I liked about “Kingdomality” is that the book was a brisk, fun read. As a pastor, I see great benefit in learning how to improve in communicating with my congregation. Aside from the funny titles and engaging narrative, the book provides real, applicable ideas that can be tailored to your work setting. As a bonus, you can go to the author’s website and take the Kingdomality Profile test to get a handle on your type and its strengths and weaknesses. You can take the test by clicking here. I tested as a “Dreamer-Minstrel” which suits me perfectly. My wife is most likely a “Doctor” and that gives me great insight on the way she thinks and how I can best communicate to her as her husband. When you get the basic ideas of the book incorporated into your life, it’s amazing how much benefit you can draw for such a little book.

I’ve studied many management forms and personality typing. This book was the first of it’s kind to bring a bit of lighthearted fun to the process while stressing that nobody can be pigeonholed into just one main type. Our tendencies will always be found in a type, but there are shades of grey in the typing that the author addresses.

The book was released in 2005 and is available both in print and audio versions. The audio version is quite entertaining as the book authors elected to produce the text as a dramatic performance with voice actors, music, and various sound effects. This was also a nice change from the standard reading of the text in many audio books.

I recommend this book to you. Of course, as a “Dreamer-Minstrel”, I’m expected to be quite upbeat and positive about all things so my review should logically focus on the positive aspects of this book and what benefits you can draw from it! You’ll figure that out after you read it! Have fun.

Murray Whelan - Shane Maloney

Tonight I’m going to break with tradition and give you three-in-one book review.

I’m shamelessly pinching some stuff from Shane Maloney’s website as his summary is nice and concise.

“There are currently six Murray Whelan novels.
Each is a stand-alone story. Sequentially, they follow Murray’s journey through the ranks of a well-known but entirely fictional Australian political party. The action takes place mainly in Melbourne, a city on the way to nowhere.”

I’m currently reading the first Murray Whelan trilogy containing: Stiff, The Brush Off & Nice Try. Actually, I’ve read Stiff and The Brush Off and am partway through Nice Try. Stiff and The Brush Off were made into movies with David Wenham as Murray Whelan with John Clarke directing Stiff and Sam Neill directing The Brush Off. In the books our hero looks like he actually knows what he’s doing but in the movies it looks far more haphazard. I saw Stiff some time ago as David Wenham is a drawcard in my books and with John Clarke directing I knew it had to be good so when I saw this trilogy in the op shop I just had to buy it. It’s been sitting on my shelf for quite a while and I’ve been saving it for a rainy day.

I think you could class them as political thrillers and they give a very nice insight into the way politics works. They are based in Melbourne so it’s lovely for Melburnites as we get to see our landmarks and we can actually picture the streets and walk in Murray’s shoes, so to speak. Stiff is partly set in the trade unions in Brunswick with all the colourful sights and sounds around there, The Brush Off is set in the world of the Arts so you get to see more of the city with the Arts Centre and the Botanic Gardens right in the centre of the action. In Nice Try he’s moved to the Olympic Bid and Fitzroy Street so we see that area and also Heidelberg. The descriptions are fitting and I love reading the descriptions of buildings that are no longer there and just picturing them. I’m thinking most specifically of a building that used to be next to the Arts Centre.

One of the colourful aspects of the books is the totally Australian phrases the author has thrown in. And wouldn’t you know it but it’d take me a month of Sundays to find one of them now. I have just spent a few minutes trying and come up with nothing so I might edit this with one or two next time they come up.

Warnings: Violence, death, sex and swearing.

Sandra Lousada - Public Faces Private Places

Copyright Sandra Lousada 2009 courtesy Frances Lincoln Limited

While reading Sandra Lousada’s retrospecitive monograph, Public Faces Private Places, I am impressed with the intimate and sensitive portraits that she has been capturing for the last fifty years. Her subjects are predominately the public figures of the United Kingdom, both in their roles as actors and private personas that occur during the day-to-day behind the scenes.

Her portraits are mostly obtained while on commercial assignment for a large assortment of magazines, eventually including those published in the United States. While we may recognize her subject’s public persona, we may not have been able to identify the photographer behind the lens. Lousada has created a body of professional portraits that attempt to reveal her subject, and now this collection of photographs allow her own professional personality to quietly become a little more visible.

Perhaps Lousada’s ability to understand the private places of those who have public faces can be traced to her public family. Her grandfather was a MP (Oxford University) and author, Sir Alan Patrick (A.P.) Herbert, her “mum”, Jocelyn Herbert, a leading British theatre designer and her mum’s boyfriend was Gorge Devine, director of the English Stage Company. For her, Laurence Olivier just might be known as Larry.

Her start in commercial photography, especially for a woman in the late 1950’s, was more daunting that it is today. To begin as a studio assistant meant hauling enormous amounts of view camera equipment, lighting and associated gear required for commercial assignments, the domain of male assistant’s. To try to capture an assignment meant enduring the gender baias of the time, such as a straight forward rebuff she remembers from Vogue, “Only men do Beauty. Women can’t”.

Lousada was unknowingly in the middle of a big transition within the fashion industry, and the related fashion magazines. She was working during the pre-computer, instant on-monitor assessment & immediate feedback days. Perhaps it was an understanding by the series of editors that she worked with that created an editorial following, such as Willie Landels quote; “Sandra looked in her own way, with tenderness and kindness and understanding” and Felecity Clark, beauty editor while at Vogue; “We liked the soft quality of her results”.

Lousada states that she aimed to elicit as much of the real person in her photographs as possible, even on fashion and advertising shoots, creating circumstances whenever she can where the sitter or the models feels relaxed enough to move and gesture in a way that is true to themselves and habitual, and where they can almost forget that they are being watched.

In the informative Essay by Cathy Courtney, she states;

When she [Lousada] set out with her camera, it wasn’t with the aim of becoming famous. Her focus has always been on fulfilling the brief and on working as part of a team to deliver what was needed rather than on creating a professional persona whose identity was stamped on her photographs at the expense of their subject matter or the client’s requiremets. This restraint of ego has been an asset, allowing her style to develop almost subconsciously so that, as this book shows, her identity emerged through the body of her work rather than by calculated imposition. It may also have been something of a disadvantage, as the coherence and value of her output has not, until now, been properly celebrated.

Her photographs usually have a wide tonal range and she allows her subject to fall out of the frame, providing a candid and casual appearance. It is though she is an invisible observer, allowing her subjects to do what is they do with a minimum of interference. For her subjects to just be themselves, perhaps permitting their inner persona and personal habits to become more visible and be revealed.

She show us her ability to enter into a theater scene and capture the actors doing what they do best, be the character and off-stage, to allow them the space to return to normalcy. For Laurence (Larry) Olivier, to comfortably be seated and reading the newspaper while his two children look on, his daughter with rapt attention with her hair shimmering in the light. These were the days that you might still be formally dressed and relaxing at home, as I also note that his son is wearing a tie. I would guess that Olivier was probably reading the paper to them as he paged through it.

When dealing with her thematic projects, such as Hands, she has the ability capture the essence of her subject, such as the muscular and dusted hands of Sally Clarke, and create a sense of both power and sensuality. The lighting and shading create wonderful forms and lines in this study, which moves your eyes down to Clarke’s right hand manipulating the raw dough.

This book has thematic sections; Fashion, Babies, Hands, Actors, Couples, Writers, Artists, Architects, Musicians, Designers, Directors, Dancers, with a strong bent to theater performances. The majority of her portraits are in black & white, a preferred medium for her, with the fashion photographs and a few of the others in color.

Lousada is not known as well for creating iconic portraits, but has created a nice and refreshing body of work that does celebrate her subjects and not at the expense of her own individual fame. And she appears to be very comfortable with it.

Tagged, I’m it, now you!

Thanks to Claire Lancaster for passing this random little meme on, I have just completely spooked myself, but here are the rules first…

1. Collect the book that you have most handy. 2. Turn to page 161. 3. Find the 5th complete sentence. 4. Site the sentence on your blog. 5. Pass it on to 5 other bloggers.

So I just scuttled up to the bedroom to get the book I’ve been reading since we went on holiday at the beginning of September (I am absolutely determined to finish it, it will be a satisfying personal achievement – the first book I’ve managed to read from cover to cover in maybe two years).

The title is Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom and if you haven’t read it, put it on your Christmas list, it is the most truly moving, thought provoking and possibly life changing book (ok so outlook changing, little day to day tweak provoking is more realistic) I have ever read.

Now the creepy bit – I open the book and it falls open on the page I’m up to, which is of course page 161.  Shudder.  How spooky!  Initially I was more concerned that the book I picked up as a potential quick read wouldn’t have 161 pages being the tiny wafer thin book that it is.

Anyway, here is the extract.

The camera rolled, the third and final interview.

I will finish this book before the year is out…surely that’s realistic?!  Although the simplest of realistic tasks can become absurdly difficult to complete with a feisty 14 month old son who is now head of the household.

‘Beware Ye Double Minded’ © 2003 Bonita M Quesinberry, response to TSaS member query from Manya of California: “In James 1:8, scripture tells us that a double minded man is unstable in all his ways. Since all sin and fall short of God’s glory doesn’t that apply to all?” — solution verses from A.D. 1611 Authorized King James Version Bible

(James 1:5-8) If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth [scolds] not [for asking]; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.

TSaS begins with Webster’s New World Dictionary, Collegiate Edition, to determine the definition of double minded: this practice aids better understanding of God’s Word.

DOUBLE MINDED: adj. Undecided in mind; vacillating. VACILLATE: v.i. 1. to sway to and fro; waver; totter; stagger. 2. to fluctuate. 3. to waver in mind; show indecision; be irresolute. SYN: see hesitate. HESITATE: v.i. 1. feel unsure; pause or delay in acting, choosing or deciding; waver; hence. 3. to be reluctant; not be sure that one should. Implies a delay signifying indecision or reluctance; waver suggests especially a holding back or hesitating after a course or decision has been adopted; vacillate implies a shifting back and forth in a decision.

In reviewing James, found are the words wavering, tossed like waves of the sea, which fit the above definition of to and fro as well as back and forth— for and against— and double-minded. While James specifically refers to seeking God’s wisdom, God’s Word always is much broader than the obvious: for, overall, a double minded Christian is one who appears to live God’s requirements yet, at the same time, fails to live all of it, thus still living in sin; validating the latter behaviour with various excuses— i.e. “I don’t believe that’s really required anymore,” OR “Well, my church doesn’t teach that,” OR “Well, we all sin. It says so right there in the Bible. It’s human nature. That’s why we have the grace of Jesus,” OR “God understands that I can’t help it.”

Indeed, God does understand; for such contradictory actions directly relate to Revelation 3:15-17, speaking of this last church age of Laodicea in which we now live, together with Revelation 13:16— I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art LUKEWARM, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked. And he [Lucifer] causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to RECEIVE a [LUCIFER'S] MARK [seal, sign, token] IN THEIR RIGHT HAND, OR IN THEIR FOREHEADS.

Having referred to Satan’s mark symbolically being in the hand or the forehead, we must include Revelation 7:3— Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have SEALed the SERVANTS OF our GOD IN THEIR FOREHEADS.

Add to these the fact the Bible is written not for the world, rather only for God’s chosen of Israel and Christ’s chosen sheep: the church. These marks are symbolic, demonstrated by a person’s behaviour. Those with the seal of God upon their forehead completely fulfill Revelation 12:17~ — Which obey the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Those who bear the beast’s mark either seemingly fulfill Revelation 12:17, yet their actions deny, therefore the mark is in the hand to symbolize action as opposed to total belief— in other words, they vow belief but actions say otherwise. See? Even God says, “Actions speak louder than words”. OR, they blatantly do not fulfill Revelation 12:17, thus demonstrating the mark in the forehead: behaviour matching no true belief.

The hand, as noted, implies a Christian appearance and a claim for Jesus yet certain behaviours do not live up to such claims: “a form of godliness but lacking the power thereof” and “even the demons profess Jesus.” These people fail to abide by ALL of God’s doctrine, usually living part of His canon according to the Bible and the remainder according to denominational false teachings: ancient Israel’s errors all over again.

The forehead denotes a person lacking Christian behaviour altogether and/or laying no claim to God, Jesus, and Christianity. These utterly reject God either in blatant wicked behaviour—violating El’s Law as desired— or by claiming to be atheistic or agnostic. Certainly many atheists and agnostics might well live up to certain moral codes similar to those of God’s. Alas, they do so strictly by laws of the land— which is true legalism— as opposed to doing so for our Father because of a belief in and love for Him and His Christ as well as trusting that obeying His doctrine is in our best interest.

Now, it should be apparent that double mindedness might occur amidst two different groups within the church: cold and lukewarm. Obviously, the hot are those members who are on fire for the Lord, have the faith of and in Jesus, believe He is the Son of God, obey ALL of God’s commandments, and teach others to do the same, as noted in Isaiah 8:16,20 paraphrased: “Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples. They speak only my testimony and teach only my law, because there is light in them.” Therefore, double mindedness does not apply to the hot.

Cold are those confused; but because they are cold, they actively seek warmth: as it were, God’s wisdom and knowledge. Being cold denotes this person believes, yet distinctly feels as though something is missing in his or her walk with the Lord. The hot can aide in bringing this person fully into El’s warmth. During this phase of being cold, it is possible for this person to appear to be double minded: in that he or she may vacillate between pure and false doctrines until God’s Truth finally is both found and understood. Then, he or she adamantly and instantly will accept and wholly obey.

Lukewarm are those who have heard and know the Truth— being God’s Law, doctrine— believing this to be all they need. This was very true amidst the Pharisees during Christ’s ministry. Today’s lukewarm Christians, however, are very passive about speaking God’s testimony and teaching His Law, not wanting to disturb the world around them: “There’s two things I don’t get into discussions about, politics and religion.” Sound familiar? This smacks of preserving convenience and peace in an individual’s life. Jesus didn’t come to bring peace. He came with a sword to divide and conquer, instructing that His disciples carry the same sword of Truth to conquer and divide the wheat from the weeds.

Lukewarm might pay tithes but will not go out of their way to help others, either financially or with their time. Lukewarm is the only spiritual condition where obeying God’s Law could be referred to as legalism. As Jesus accused, “You didn’t feed the hungry, house the homeless, cloth the naked, visit the sick and those falsely imprisoned. Therefore, you did nothing for me. I do not know you.” To not be known by Christ is to reap Satan’s token of twice dead.

Lukewarm distinctly is double minded, obeying only part of God’s will and, like the Pharisees, leaving out the weightier matters of El’s doctrine. To such attitude, God says He will spew them out of His mouth. In any day and age, this means a second death for them: IF they do not repent and change their ways immediately.

According to Revelation 3:18-19, these are the only humans, during these end days of Laodicea, who still have the option to repent: mainly because they answered the call to salvation prior to Laodicea and do know the truth. Otherwise, salvation no longer is on offer, to anyone not previously called, in this church era: “…for the time is at hand. “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. And, behold, I come quickly.” (Revelation 22:10~, 11, ~12)

Amos 8:12—They [unjust and filthy] shall wander from sea to sea, from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.

While Amos is speaking of Israel’s utter collapse following Christ’s ministry, the warning applies equally to this Laodicea era and fully harmonizes with II Timothy 3:5,7— “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. [They are] ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

About now, a few might be exclaiming in horror, “But, I’m just now learning God’s truth and I’ve believed for years and years. And, I’m obeying His truth as I learn it!” Then he or she must be one of the cold that was seeking warmth: having been called to salvation sometime prior to February 1991: possibly through a denominational organization, but now find his or her self currently realizing something definitely is missing. So, he or she began seeking what was missing. Welcome to the Elect. God never said He would spew out of His mouth those cold: for with them He sees hope, even in these end days.

To fail to do any part of God’s Doctrine and His Will is to commit sin: as we discovered when learning God’s viewpoint regarding tithe. Those who bear the seal of God, DO NOT SIN: for sin is transgression of the Law and those sealed are compelled by love to obey God’s Law. It states in Revelation 14:12 that “the wisdom of the saints are they who obey God’s Precepts and have the same level of faith as that of Jesus.”

The term double minded can not, in any way, apply to the Cold. They are people who, no doubt, sinned in the past— therefore, will continue to be called a sinner as long as in this sin-scarred flesh— but, for love of the Father and His son, he or she chooses to no longer sin: they understand the weightier matters of sin and chose to sacrifice their flesh body, therefore no longer giving in to sin. This doesn’t mean they aren’t tempted thereafter! We all are tempted but choose to reject the temptation each time Satan rears his ugly head.

To sin is to choose to sin. We either override the flesh, which can be tempted, by allowing our spirit being within to dominate, which cannot be tempted; or, we choose to give in to temptation to violate one or more of God’s Statutes: to willingly commit sin.

Proverbs 21:6— The getting of [worldly] treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity tossed to and fro of them that seek [the second] death.

To knowingly sin, after learning God’s Truth, sets up one’s self for a “certain fearful awaiting of judgment: for there is no further atonement.” As scriptures state, Christ’s atonement blood was shed to cover our PAST sins, those things we did in ignorance before accepting His call and blood: He died once and will not die again for humanity.

Before James ever existed, Elijah defined double-mindedness in I Kings 18:21— “And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? If the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal [Lucifer], then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.” Elijah was referring to God’s Precepts and His Sabbath.

{Baal is an Egyptian false god, therefore it is proper to refer to Baal and any other false gods as being various forms Lucifer manifests: just as within Christianity, he takes on the appearance of light— a wolf in sheep’s clothing— represented by his great whore and her harlot daughters, his ministers also appearing as ministers of light.}

The above was and remains today an abomination to God, for which the Jews have been mightily punished: an example to us of what He hates with a perfect hate. Elijah was telling them that it must be one or the other. It cannot be both. To do both is to be double-minded or, as Revelation indicates, lukewarm. This is akin to having one foot in El’s camp and the other in Satan’s world. As far as God is concerned, and unless both feet are in His camp, then both feet are considered in Satan’s. Riding the fence is unacceptable and is recognized only by Beelzebub, for which he gladly renders his “mark of Sunday.”

Despite having been warned time and again, the people continued as they wanted, instead of in accordance with Jehovah’s message through various ancient prophets. Corporate Christendom does the same thing today, despite Jesus having both taught and lived His Father’s doctrine as our living example to follow, the same performed by His Apostles, disciples and proselytes. Still, Christendom justifies its abominations by “saving heathens” who worship no god or numerous gods. This didn’t work for the Jews: as history chronicles. It won’t work for us Gentiles, any more than it did them.

Paul clearly describes wavering in Ephesians 4:14— That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, CARRIED ABOUT WITH EVERY WIND OF DOCTRINE, by the sleight [tricks] of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.

(James 4:2-4,7-8,17) Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. Ye ADULTERERS AND ADULTERESSES, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the ENEMY OF GOD.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. CLEANSE YOUR HANDS, ye sinners; and PURIFY YOUR HEARTS, YE DOUBLE-MINDED. Therefore to HIM THAT KNOWeth TO DO GOOD, AND DOeth IT NOT, TO HIM IT IS [COUNTED AS] SIN.

James adds clarification of a double-minded person: one who knows what is sin yet does it anyway. There is no shadow of doubt that Israel knew God’s Truth: after all, it came by way of Israel. But, man’s arrogance got in the way. We are told to clean our hands—to change our behaviour, actions— and purify our hearts: first to acknowledge and admit sins committed, then change our heart to one desiring to please and obey God.

Leaders of Christ’s church are cautioned in I Timothy 3:8— Likewise must the DEACONS BE grave, NOT DOUBLE-TONGUED, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre [monetary gain].

Double-tongued is to contrarily say or teach what people want to hear, at the same time knowing God’s Truth— speaking either God’s doctrine or mankind’s or a little of both— instead of what they need to hear by keeping strictly to God’s policy. What people want to hear are smoothly spoken words to ease a guilty conscience. The great whore and her harlot daughters do this quite well through their corporate Christendom leaders of myriad denominations, whose creeds are just as widely varied. Appropriately, Christ’s church leaders are cautioned not to become greedy: which greed we see in abundance today among Sunday’s denominational and evangelical leaders. They even pay great homage to Hollywood: in fact, all forms of worldly entertainment.

The remaining part of the question deals with the fact we all are sinners. Sadly, corporate Christendom has caused confusion regarding the fact we all are called sinners: as though no matter what we do we are destined to continue sinning. They twist the term called to mean we continue to sin once saved; so, they falsely teach a once-saved-always-saved dogma and blasphemously lay it at Christ’s cross: blasphemy. As Grace Times Seven revealed, we can lose salvation anytime before achieving the sixth step of grace.

Biblically, if we committed so much as one sin during our entire life but never sinned again once saved, we still are known as sinners— which is to say, we are called sinners— as long as we wear this corruptible flesh: this temporary body bears the scars of a sin or multiple sins. Corruptible flesh is another of God’s two-fold messages: it was destined to sin before fully converted, as noted in last week’s Extra Oil— if the Father called such person to Jesus— AND it is destined to decay and die because of sin. Ah, but we are spirit beings, not that body of terribly scarred flesh.

Consequently, while we might take on Christ like perfection, obeying henceforth in all things, we were not perfect to begin with—Christ was not born of sin and never sinned in His lifetime, virginal as it were— thus, we wear a scarlet letter upon our damaged flesh. God-acknowledged perfection occurs when we are given new, incorruptible garments— which never can sin and is destined to eternal life— in exchange for this tattered one. Our new clothing will match our clean hands and purified heart. Once we repent and change our ways, this old garment no longer fits. It fit perfectly the old filthy ways.

Once a person commits to total obedience, his or her mindset changes as well. Like Paul, as long as he or she is in this flesh, it is to be absent from the Lord and he or she longs to be in heaven with Him instead of here in this sick, dying world; yet, he or she willingly remains until God deems his or her mission complete and grants rest, or Christ returns to take him or her up: whichever comes first is irrelevant to His servants.

Hebrews 10:22-31,35-39— Let us draw near [Christ] with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised); and let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works; not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting [encouraging] one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching [of Christ's return].

For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries [wicked and filthy and their father Lucifer].

He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge His people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence [promise] of reward.

For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry [delay]. Now the just shall live by faith [that Christ will return]: but if any man draw back [into sin], my soul shall have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition [deadly sin]; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

Concluding advice: be not double minded; it is a deadly wide road with only utter destruction waiting at its end.

——Christ will come as early as mid-October to early-November 2009 or 2010 but no later than those same months in 2011. Book of Hebrews says He will not be late. Time is of the essence. If not fully converted, time is your enemy; for total conversion in this age must be instant, this day, today: do not delay.

——Pray for every human! Be watchful, standing fast even if facing death. WE HAVE GOD’S POWER. KEEP WALKING and TALKING, even when it seems useless: you might snatch one lost, lukewarm sheep from God’s fiery wrath. So saith the Lord, “Ye lukewarm await consuming fire.”

The Secret Keeper by Paul Harris

Author: Gail Pruszkowski
Source: ezinearticles.com

The Secret Keeper is an incredibly powerful debut novel by journalist Paul Harris, who has been the US Correspondent for the British weekly newspaper The Observer since 2003. Before that he reported from Africa for the Daily Telegraph, the Associated Press and Reuters. The Secret Keeper was inspired by the conflicts he covered in Sierra Leone in 2000.

Reading The Secret Keeper is an intense experience, every page contains a vivid description, an extraordinary observation or a baffling choice. Baffling to those of us who find it hard to understand what makes a journalist go to a war torn country and put his life in danger. Harris brings life to a period of time the rest of us only know from newspaper accounts or TV. It would make a marvelous movie.

Danny Kellerman, a British journalist,, Search By Email
, receives an unexpected letter from an old girlfriend and it turns his life upside down. Maria Tirado, a children’s relief worker, was his lover when he was on assignment, Search By Email
, in Sierra Leone. But that was four years ago and he hasn’t heard from her since. The note says that she is in trouble and needs his, Search By Email
, help; it’s too dangerous to call or email.

Danny does a Google search and is devastated to discover that Maria was murdered, Search By Email
, before her note reached him. Authorities in Africa are calling it a roadside robbery but Danny has his doubts. He also has a girlfriend and a new, Search By Email
, life in London but he’s determined to find out what really happened to Maria. He convinces his editor to send him back and he will get him a story. Danny returns to Africa where corruption is rampant; he can trust no one and the secrets that he uncovers, Search By Email
, will change everything.

The canvas is large,, Search By Email
, Harris effortlessly, Search By Email
, transports readers between 2000 and 2004, London and West Africa. His ability to keep things moving and portray the atmosphere in two different locations adds a lot of depth to the book. The descriptions are quite graphic, some horrifically so. I learned quite a bit about the civil war and post-war deception in Sierra Leone.

Harris demonstrates his creative talents with an intriguing storyline, realistic dialogue and a sympathetic protagonist. His characters are not stereotypes; they’re carefully drawn paradigms of their countries.

This is a book that succeeds, Search By Email
, on multiple levels, a complex, Search By Email
, tale of political intrigue, a story of moral dilemmas, bittersweet romance and the journey of a man who must come to terms with the truth. It’s a tough read emotionally but well worth the time, a story that will linger in your mind long after you turn the last page.

Interview With Lee Denning, SF Author of Monkey Trap

Author: Mayra Calvani
Source: ezinearticles.com

Lee Denning is the pen name of not one author but two–Denning Powell and his daughter Lee, who apparently make an awesome science fiction writing team. In this interview Powell talks about how they went about writing the first novel in the series, Monkey Trap, as well as other aspects of writing and publishing. The sequel to Monkey Trap, Hiding Hand, is scheduled to be released by Twilight Times Books this August.

When did you decide you wanted to become an author? Do you have another job besides writing?

After 30 years of science and engineering and starting/running a consulting business, I decided to go back to my inner child, Search By Email
, . I Decided I needed a retirement job I could go to naked, so I picked writing. Not being totally wacky, I still do engineering work part-time to pay the bills. My daughter Leanne, poor dear, got sucked into, Search By Email
, the creative process and we write together, but she works full-time in the psych/marketing area.

Were you an avid reader as a child? What type of books did you enjoy reading?

Read everything, Search By Email
, from comic books to the Bible (well, a little), Search By Email
, . The earliest was Edgar Rice Burroughs, his Tarzan and Mars books, and Heinlein/Clark/Asimov was the next phase, I think.

Tell us a bit about your latest book, and what inspired you to write such a story.

I conceived Monkey Trap in 1971 while I was in the Air Force, in a boring staff job at Tan Son Nhut airbase in Saigon, and actually, Search By Email
, wrote about 100 pages longhand, Search By Email
, . Then I got an opportunity to go upcountry with an Army Special Forces unit and life got interesting and I later got busy building a career after the Air Force so I put the thing down for 30 years. In 2001 I dug those 100 pages out of the attic and read them. The writing was crap, and I threw it all out, but the ideas were good: humanity is on the cusp of an evolutionary development that could bring great good or great evil, and a test has to be run to decide whether to let the development progress or pull the plug (i.e., are the human monkeys smart enough to avoid their internal traps?).

How did you and your daughter go about writing the book? Did you take each a subsequent chapter?

Our approach wasn’t particularly organized or specified to begin with, but has evolved as we progress…

For Monkey Trap, I’d already structured the story, gotten organized, and was up to about chapter, Search By Email
, 8 on the actual writing when I happened to, Search By Email
, mention to Lee what I was doing. She, Search By Email
, was in college at the time and got very excited about it. She asked to see what I’d done, and started feeding me ideas, and then really got sucked in and started contributing some writing,, Search By Email
, and by the end of the story, she’d told about a quarter of the story (I think her grades suffered a bit in her senior year, but I didn’t, Search By Email
, say anything).

What about for your sequel, Hiding Hand?

For Hiding Hand (publication date August 2008), we started that book jointly from scratch, and were much better organized. The sequence was… an email concept/brainstorming effort that we called Table A, followed by an email plotting/character development effort that we called Table B, followed by an email story outline/structure that we called Table C. (Our collaboration is mostly email because she’s on the west coast of the US and I’m on the east coast.) Table C was what we actually wrote from – it laid out for each chapter what we needed to accomplish, and described the scenes that had to take place (typically averaging 5 scenes per chapter). Lee wrote a lot of the female character scenes, and I wrote a lot of the male character scenes, although there wasn’t any hard dividing line. I mostly did the bad guy mullah Muhammad Zurvan, because — hahahaha — I just really like working with the bad guys; and I mostly did the boy hero Joshua… probably so I could redeem my own misspent youth. Lee mostly did the female good child Eva, because she’s a lot closer to the female inner child than I can ever hope to be; and she also did the old Crone Hessa, Search By Email
, because of the psychological and metaphysical conflictedness of the poor dear. But, we traded scenes back and forth and marked them up, so we both had an almost inseparable involvement in developing each of the characters – I don’t think either of us can claim any one character as solely our own. This sort of collaboration probably explains why the characters in Monkey Trap rang true through the story, and hopefully readers will feel the same about the characters in Hiding Hand.

For Splintered Light (now in progress) we followed the same basic Table A/B/C organization, but the Hiding Hand experience taught us that there’s no point in getting too directive or overly organized about Table C – once you start the actual writing the story starts to tell itself and you’d best go with the flow. At the scene level (to get back to one of your earlier questions about structured versus stream-of-consciousness) the writing becomes almost all stream-of-consciousness. The structure we’d set up to guide it (i.e., Table C) sometimes works pretty well (maybe 40% of the time), and sometimes, Search By Email
, not at all (maybe 30%) and sometimes sort of works (the other 30%). We’re realistic about this — when the muse beast has the bit in its teeth, you gotta give it free rein. But we never abandon the structure, because it’s a good context for the, Search By Email
, story – it reminds us exactly, Search By Email
, what to accomplish in each chapter and scene. So if what we wrote doesn’t accomplish what we intended – and if we think what we intended is still valid – then we try to reconcile the left-brain and the right-brain differences across the corpus callosum of two people who are quite different in many ways. Somehow that always works, because Lee and I are also quite similar in many ways besides genetic, and because – as they say – love conquers, Search By Email
, all. To tell the truth, I really don’t know quite what to make of the process… but it’s a lot of fun…

How would you describe your creative process while writing this book? Was it stream-of-consciousness writing, or did you first write an outline?

I can do stream-of-consciousness for maybe five pages, after that it’s hopelessly, Search By Email
, inefficient – way too much total rework afterwards. Our novels are longish (180,000 words), and with two authors you have to be very structured, otherwise you run off into the weeds pretty quickly. So we structure, and draw diagrams (yeah, anal-retentive, but hell, I’m an engineer), and outline, and re-structure,, Search By Email
, and consider specifically the point of each chapter and each scene therein and how, Search By Email
, they feed into the story, Search By Email
, . It’s painful.

From the moment you conceived the idea for the, Search By Email
, story, to the published book, how long did it take?

About three years for Monkey Trap. In terms of time commitment over those three years? Between Leanne and myself we spent 242 hours structuring, 1305 hours writing, and, Search By Email
, 2466 hours editing/reworking. Yes… exactly… we now know what not to do. The second novel went more smoothly, and the third,, Search By Email
, Search By Email
, is going pretty smoothly too. It’s a learning curve…

Describe your working environment.

Small office, all resources at finger-tip reach. Few distractions except the cat demanding an occasional rub.

Are you a disciplined writer?

Totally disciplined as to good intent and sitting down to write. Once seated, though, I tend to fritter time away trying to actually start writing – I do a bunch of meaningless little chores to avoid plunging in. It’s, Search By Email
, like the water’s, Search By Email
, too cold and I have to dunk my tootsies multiple, Search By Email
, times. Anybody with a mental vaccine for that I’d love a shot of it…

Have you ever suffered, Search By Email
, from writer’s block? What seems to, Search By Email
, work for unleashing your creativity?

Never had the displeasure, or at least not long enough that I, Search By Email
, found it problematic. Lucky, I guess.

Technically speaking, what do you have to struggle with the most when writing? How do you tackle it?

Deepening characters by their actions, Search By Email
, or words (or sometimes lack thereof) rather than using exposition. That requires a fair amount of subtlety and usually multiple re-works.

How was your experience in looking for a publisher? What words of advice would you offer those novice authors who are in search of one?

I dropped the manuscript for Monkey Trap (unagented) on the major sci-fi publishing houses. The general response was thanks, we put it in our slush pile, you may hear from us in a couple of years. So I pulled it back. My advice is to do, Search By Email
, what I did next – look over all the small houses, see if their niche matches your story, and send it to those (complying with what their submission process is, of course). If there’s no interest, consider the self-publishing route.

What type of book promotion seems to work the best for you?

Wish I had a magic bullet for this one. The best approach is to write something really good and then try to get some word-of-mouth buzz going (along with the internet equivalent thereof).

What is(are) your favorite book/author(s)? Why?

Lately… Greg Iles for his varied innovative plots, Lee Childs for his protagonist development, Orson Scott Card for his original ideas.

What is the best writing advice you’ve ever received?

Same as in life – just be persistent, keep plugging, try to get better.

Do you have a website/blog, Search By Email
, where readers may learn more about you and your work?

Yep, it’s www.monkeytrap.us. It has the first chapter of Monkey Trap, a couple of PowerPoint synopses of the story, and a full-length screenplay (the story was designed, Search By Email
, from the ground up to be a movie). The first chapter of Hiding Hand also is on the website. No blog as yet, Lee and I currently are trying to figure out the most effective/efficient method.

Do you, Search By Email
, have another book on the works? Would you like to tell readers about your current or future projects?

Monkey Trap is the first of a trilogy about evolution of a new human species. Book 2 – Hiding Hand – is scheduled for publication in August 2008. Book 3 -, Search By Email
, Splintered Light – is in draft.

Anything else you’d like to say about yourself or your work?

There’s an incredible amount of good writing out there these days in the sci-fi and fantasy genres, much more than 20 or 30 years ago. So it’s a tougher market to break into… but on the other hand, the creative process has always been its own reward and one that’s worth pursuing.

When you read SF novels today, what are the plots/themes which seem to come up again and again?

Less emphasis on outer space and more on inner space – how the protagonist deals with the challenge, fails, grows, overcomes. Also, I think there’s much more of a (blurry) crossover between sci-fi and fantasy… you see it in mystical/spiritual themes that are either explicit to many stories or serve as their underpinnings, Search By Email
, .

What is the greatest challenge when writing science fiction?

Deepening characters is by far the toughest nut for me to crack. On the science side, it’s sometimes difficult to judge how much hard science detail to put into a story to get to that suspension-of-disbelief point where you’ve got the readers sucked in – too much tech set up and you lose certain readers, not enough and other readers will get irritated by the lack of plausibility. Lee and I go back and forth on that issue a fair amount.

Thanks for stopping by! It was a pleasure to have you here!

<em>Just and Unjust Wars: A Moral Argument with Historical Illustrations</em> (Fourth Edition) by Michael Walzer

I began reading this book on July 21, 2009, having borrowed it from my son’s girlfriend; now, on October 14, 2009, I have completed my reading of this book. It was not that I didn’t like the book that took me so long to read it; my problem was that it was a good book that also took concentrated effort to read, and concentrated effort to read was something that was in rather short supply for the past few months. But, I have completed my reading of the book; and, since I got a brand-new copy to return to my son’s girlfriend (the reading copy I borrowed from her is rather beat-up), I am glad to have my own copy of this work, as it was a book I liked, and liked very much.

The work is divided into Four Parts and an Afterword. Part One deals with The Moral Reality of War, dealing with topics like The Crime of War (taking General Sherman and the Burning of Atlanta as an illustration of his points) and The Rules of War. Part Two is The Theory of Aggression, with such items as Law and Order in International Society, and Interventions (as in the American War in Vietnam). Part Three, The War Convention, concerns topics such as Noncombatant Immunity and Military Necessity, Guerrilla War, Terrorism, and Reprisals. Part Four concerns itself with Dilemmas of War: Aggression and Neutrality, Supreme Emergency, and Nuclear Deterrence. Part Five deals with The Question of Responsibility, as in The Crime of Aggression: Political Leaders and Citizens, and War Crimes: Soldiers and Their Officers (the My Lai Massacre). Finally, the Afterward covers the topic Nonviolence and the Theory of War.

I find is well nigh impossible to summarize the author’s writings in this book. Part of the problem is that I spent such a long time reading this book that it is difficult to recall what impressed me in the earlier chapters; and part of it is that the whole question of Just and Unjust Wars, with all their moral problems, is a huge territory to cover.

War is pretty much a given in our world; and war works under different rules than ordinary life. (If I take a gun and kill someone, meaning to kill him, it is murder of some kind – but if I am a soldier and kill an enemy combatant, then it is not murder.) All military systems train soldiers to obey orders without question – except that one is not supposed to obey an order that is immoral. In many ways, immorality in war, either in why it is being waged in a particular instance, or how it is being waged in a particular instance, is a judgement call – which is why war crimes trials of various kinds are so controversial. (The Allies won in World War II, so the Allies got to have War Crimes Trials on German and Japanese military and government figures; if the Axis had won, surely they would have War Crimes Trials on Allied military and government figures.)

This is a book with applicability in both the consideration of past wars (those who forget the past are indeed compelled to repeat it) and for current and future wars; for as we are not in a perfect world, there will be future wars, and one would hope that if we must be in wars, that we will be in them for the right reasons, and behave morally in those wars.

Why Women Have Sex - The Reasons May Surprise You

I just read an interesting article on Time.com regarding a new book – that I really want to read. This article was posted at http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1928189,00.html?xid=newsletter-weekly

Why Women Have Sex

By Alyssa Fetini Tuesday, Oct. 06, 2009

While figuring out what women want has stumped men for centuries, understanding how they think about sex may have just gotten easier. Cindy Meston and David Buss, psychologists at the University of Texas, interviewed over 1,000 women around the world for their book Why Women Have Sex and managed to come up with 237 reasons, ranging from the predictable — commitment — to the puzzling — curing a headache. Spoiler alert: love may be further down on the list than one might think. TIME spoke to Buss about the myriad mind games, turn-ons and turn-offs involved in female sexuality, and what a guy can do to stand a chance.

You co-authored a famous 2007 study “Why Humans Have Sex.” Why focus on women this time around?
We discovered that women’s sexual psychology turned out to be far more complex than we envisioned. [It] deserved an entire book-length treatment. (See photos: “The Best of the Bond Girls”)

What differences between men and women did you notice?
There are important gender differences in sexuality, but these must be interpreted within the context of a high level of similarity. Both women and men have sex because they are physically attracted to the person, for pure pleasure, because they are in love, or simply because they are horny. But within the overall similarity, I’d say women’s sexuality tends to be more linked with love and emotional bonding. Women, more than men, like sex when there’s some kind of emotional connection. Men were more likely to have sex simply because the opportunity presented itself. Women tend to be pickier, especially for short-term sexual encounters. And men are more motivated to have sex to boost their status among their peers, although some women in our study also had sex for precisely this reason. (Read more about the chemistry of desire.)

What are the main reasons why women have sex?
The most frequent reasons include: sexual attraction to the person, the desire for physical pleasure, to express affection, to express their love for a person or because they were sexually aroused and wanted release.

Other important reasons are to boost their self-esteem or sexual esteem, to get revenge, to secure “mate insurance” in case a partner dumps them, to relieve pain, to achieve health benefits such as getting rid of a headache — yes, it works — to decrease stress, to lose weight and as a sleep aid. We devote one chapter to “sexual economics,” which focuses on all the ways in which women have sex as an exchange for other benefits, such as getting her partner to take out the garbage, securing free dinners or getting expensive gifts. We also devote one chapter to what we call “the dark side” of women’s sexuality — when women have sex because they were deceived, coerced or forced into it. (See photos: “Same-Sex Overtures Across Species”)

Any particularly surprising findings?
I was surprised by the importance of revenge. A few had sex in order to give someone else a sexually transmitted disease. More commonly, women’s revenge sex involved getting back at a cheating partner, or having sex with the partner of a friend who had poached her partner. Actually, the frequency of mate-poaching also surprised me — the frequency with which women try to lure men who are already “taken,” either for a short-term sexual liaison or a longer-term relationship. Most women have experienced mate-poaching in one form or another, either as the mate poacher or as the victim.

How does evolution explain some of these complexities?
Sexual attraction often boils down to what Darwin called “female choice.” Modern women are the descendants of a long and unbroken line of ancestral mothers who made wise sexual choices. As descendants of these successful women, modern women carry with them the sexual psychology — the ancestral wisdom — that led to the success of their female forebears. So women find cues to health, status and protection to be sexually attractive. These are all qualities that led to better survival and reproductive outcomes.(Read about teen girls and sex.)

On the competition side, evolution by selection is an inherently competitive process. It’s a cliché that “the good men are all taken, permanent bachelors or gay.” And there’s some truth to this. The number of truly desirable and available men is limited. So women are in sexual competition with other women for access to the most desirable men. Modern women are the descendants of ancestral mothers who succeeded in besting other women in these sexual competitions.

What physical features do women tend to find most attractive in men?
Body is important to women. Women are sexually attracted to men with a V-shaped torso, or a high shoulder-to-hip ratio, and men who are taller than average. Interestingly, women do not like muscle-bound men, and men misperceive how muscular women want them to be. The face is also critical. A symmetrical face is a health cue, as are a good head of hair and masculine features such a strong jaw and a deep voice. Women generally don’t find feminine-looking or feminine-sounding men to be sexually attractive.

What advice could you give to the men out there not blessed with Michael Phelps’ torso and George Clooney’s face? What can they do to stay in the game?

Have good hygiene. Sense of smell is critical. A man who smells bad, or who has bad breath — that can be a sexual kill switch for women. Interestingly, women have a keener sense of smell than men, so men are sometimes oblivious to how bad they smell to women. A man’s scent conveys critical information to women about a man’s health status.

The other thing to note about what women find sexually attractive centers on cues that convey personality, sense of humor, self-confidence and social status. These things can transform an average-looking man into a sexually attractive man in the minds of many women.

I will not review your self-published book

First, let me offer you my sincere congratulations for writing a book and taking the initiative to self-publish and self-market your work.

I wish you all the best, and please let us know if you plan to hold a local book signing so that we can help you get the word out.

However, please do not send it to me to review. It’s a waste of a book that you spent good money on. Do not call me three times asking for me to review it, because it won’t happen.

As Globe features editor, I instituted this policy several years ago for a number of reasons:

1.) These books trickle in on a regular basis. I have a stack of 11 books that we have received in less than two months. If we review one, then that means in all fairness we have to review all of them. Not going to happen.

2.) Some of these books appear to be quite good. Others … well, simply aren’t. While I’m sure your childhood in Choctaw, Okla., was very memorable, was it so memorable that you had to spend a thousand dollars to share it with the world? And while writing a 150-page poem satirizing Matt Lauer seemed hilarious to you when you wrote it, I’m afraid to say that it just isn’t. Plus, I’m sparing you the trauma of me giving an open and honest assessment of your godawful rhyme scheme in the pages of your local newspaper.

3.) Some (though not all) of these print-on-demand companies are scams, milking writers for large sums of money and delivering an inferior product. And by giving some of these companies legitimacy by reviewing the books, it could potentially steer other budding writers into the same trap.

4.) What you’re asking for is a free advertisement to help you recoup the money you’ve invested. I’d suggest starting a Web site to market your book, checking with local book stores to see if they’ll carry it for you and, again, let us know if you’re having a signing or other event so we can help get the word out.

I hope that your self-published book becomes a success and starts you off on the path of literary success.

Just don’t ask me to review your book.

(Watch for my latest book from PublishMyBookForCash Press, “Growing Up with Chron’s Disease: Haikus and Memories of a Lifetime in the John.” The review will appear in next Sunday’s paper.)

Extraordinary, indeed

I’m woman enough to admit that I may have rolled my eyes when I read the title of the book scheduled for review this week. Extraordinary – The Life You’re Meant to Live sounded suspiciously like so many other books encouraging Christians to “seize the day” and “partner with God”.  Ideas which, in theory, sound fine but often bring frustration and disappointment.*  It brings me great joy to report that my assumption was incorrect.  Extraordinary by John Bevere is an insightful, straight-forward work encouraging Christians to seek personal holiness.  He points out that, according to Scripture, the life we were meant to live is one that is pleasing to God.  Mr. Bevere teaches principles that, sadly, are often absent from modern-day so-called Christian studies. Topics such as repentance and righteous living are presented in a truthful, loving manner without the use of snappy slogans or slick catchphrases. There are no “4 steps” or “7 keys” to attaining this God-pleasing existence…just Biblical instruction and thought-provoking questions that encourage readers to press on toward an extraordinary life.

Extra Oil Update

Earth IS Reeling To & Fro like a Drunkard— Obama, Weeds choke, New Vision: Heart Pounding Disconnection, Be “Converted” or left dead amidst ring of fire

Prophecy’s Extra Oil Update 22-URGENT: Vision or Full Conversion
©copyright 2009 Bonita M Quesinberry

President Obama received Nobel Peace Prize for stance & work in bringing together all nations for common goal of economic stability and peace; Obama best ever globally visible president & most visible in US in effort to create transparent presidency and government. Caution: do not assume by this, as many have, that Obama is the antichrist. He cannot be; for that title depicts corporate Christendom led by the “Abomination of Desolation” representative seen in 1993 & 2001 in Jerusalem where “he ought not to be.”

This week’s recall to Fully Convert is crucial to all sheep, especially since short is the time to Christ’s return. Also, we include a vision God kindly gave to one of Christ’s Sheep— it will scare you to death, IF you are lukewarm!

The last Extra Oil Special mentioned the particularly tenacious pig weed taking over and killing millions of acres of US crops— TSaS is reminded of God’s Truth being wheat and man’s lies the weeds that choke out many who first came to the Truth by God’s Son, albeit surrounded by lies and a false sabbath; yet others would survive despite the rapid growth of choking weeds. Christ instructed that the weeds be left alone, for in the end only the strong in Truth will survive to harvest for that journey of a lifetime: God’s safe haven of heaven! Then, later, back to earth’s Garden of Eden.

Revelation depicted those lies as a “flood to destroy Christ’s church.” Have you “come out of her,” as God instructed; so that you do not partake of her sins and her plagues for death? Not only is “her” Papal Rome but also Sunday keeping Protestant denominations “her” harlot daughters: the false sabbath Sunday being an undeniable umbilical cord between mother and daughters. Death is so close for them and their flocks of goats, that what few cold or lukewarm sheep might be in their midst must leave instantly and must absolutely accept the Truth of those vile women’s deadly goal— separation from God forever— that is to be “twice dead.”

Recently, Truth Speaker BonnieQ’s foster daughter Tammy, in Florida, gave a testimony to be share with Christ’s sheep. Tammy has known God’s Truth for 28 years yet lived as if “knowing” was all she needed (lukewarm); thus, her main focus had been financial prosperity. About four months ago, she suddenly felt an urgency to turn fully to God’s Truth and did just that at the risk of losing her job in order to follow God’s Seal.

Four weeks ago, God graciously gave her a vision; one to be shared with the world’s lukewarm. Sound asleep one night: suddenly, Tammy was awakened by excruciatingly loud noises. She leapt out of bed and ran outside to see what was happening. Instantly, she saw the brightest Light earth had ever seen and at once she was being lifted toward it— just as suddenly, Tammy awakened and jerked upright, her breathing labored, her heart pounding wildly: “I knew I was alive yet felt dead, no emotion or feelings for God and Christ or anything or anyone. Like I was disconnected from God and Christ!”

Because Tammy had waited until almost the last minute to turn around her life, God lovingly allowed her to experience what it would feel like to suddenly lose touch with Him and His Son; a definite if she were to return to a lukewarm condition. It was His way of urging Tammy to stand strong, unshakable. “I never want to feel utterly disconnected again. It scared me to death!” The feelings, that is, the lack thereof, were gone by the next morning; but, they were so vividly strong that, as Tammy said, she never wants to feel disconnected from her Father again and hopes that others who are lukewarm will take her vision experience to heart to turn around themselves, too.

This is Tammy’s message to all who have God’s Truth yet remain in the midst of the great whore or one of her harlot daughters. You can’t “fix” or “change” those denominations or their leaders, who always knew God’s Truth but lusted man’s ways. You can do only as God urged, “Come out of her, My people, that you not partake of her sins and pay her debt in death”— complete and utter disconnection from Father and Son forever:

Be Fully Converted
©copyright 2006 Bonita M Quesinberry

Jesus said to Peter, “Simon, Simon; know that Satan desires to have you, so he may devour you like sifted wheat. But, I have prayed for you, that your faith does not fail; and when you are [fully] converted, then strengthen your brethren.” ~~Luke 22:31-32, paraphrased.  I Peter 5:6-9 confirms: Satan desires to have all of us. “Strengthen your brethren” goes hand in hand with those mature in God’s Word and who are teaching the infants in God’s Word outside of organized denominations: covered below. Once Peter was fully converted, His instruction was to teach: to “feed” Christ’s small flocks of sheep.

Why did Christ say that to Peter about Satan? After all, Peter walked along side Jesus from day one of His ministry, boldly declaring Him the Messiah, Son of God: his Lord and Saviour. His loyalty seemed strong, unshakable throughout those three and a half years. Yet, reading further into Luke’s c.22, we find Jesus warning Peter that he would deny knowing Christ three times following His arrest. This, then, was one way Satan tempted Peter: if he acknowledged Jesus, he would die with Christ.

Imagine Peter envisioning himself hanging on one of those three crosses aside Jesus, had he owned up to being one of His followers. Fear is one of Satan’s greatest weapons used against people to turn them away from God but, more specifically, away from His Truth unaware; fear always is couched in death: fear of dying. To fear death of our flesh, to fear anything and anyone, is a clear sign that we do not know God and Christ thus certainly do not trust either. One might believe in them yet not know them: even the demons believe but they will not be redeemed.

God said, “I do not give you a spirit of fear, rather I give you a spirit of peace.” Also, “My people perish for lack of knowledge.” He is not speaking about man’s knowledge or wisdom; rather, God speaks of lacking knowledge and wisdom of God and Christ.

Satan was attacking Peter throughout Christ’s ministry, as noted in “Is Healing of a Christian’s Body a Given,” which includes a section on Peter. He argued with Jesus, questioned what He was doing, and boasted of giving up everything to follow Him; each behaviour wholly unacceptable to God and Christ.

We have no right to question what God does; certainly, we have no right to argue either God’s or Christ’s directives and neither does any man have a right to change anything God has commanded; and definitely, we’ve nothing to boast about if we follow Jesus, for we did nothing to earn God’s call to His side. By God’s grace we were called, yet still had to be chosen; as Christ indicated, “Many are called, few are chosen.”

Later, Peter acted with violence against a guard who was in the act of arresting Jesus. Peter, surely thinking he was being noble and loyal, instantly yanked out his sword and sliced off the man’s ear; which ear Christ immediately restored to the guard while correcting Peter. Jesus taught us to be loving peacemakers, to walk as peaceably among mankind as possible; to love even our enemies, to give good for evil. Cutting off the man’s ear was neither peaceful nor a good action on Peter’s part. It clearly was evil and, certainly, a poor witness for Christ.

What this shows us is that Satan also wants to devour us and, despite claiming belief, we start out giving only a little of ourselves to Christ while fearing that, if we give of our whole self, we will suffer in myriad ways; which is true, we will suffer. BUT, this doesn’t mean partial conversion cannot become complete, that we cannot come to give of our entire self for Jesus; which conversion must be achieved or we perish in earth’s end coming up very rapidly.

We’ve only to understand the growth process, those steps necessary to becoming fully converted, then be willing to take the steps to gain God’s knowledge and wisdom. As instructed, we are to grow into Christ’s righteousness, which means to become as righteous as He was and is. Paul further enlightens in Philippians 2:12, “So, my beloved, since you have always obeyed, not in my presence only but even in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” We must work at becoming righteous; which is exactly why it is crucial to obey God’s Law as He wrote it in stone in the beginning, for it is the Law of Righteousness, the Law of Life, the Law of Blessings.

“When you are converted” implies full conversion is not usually immediate, though it can be, as it was in Apostle John: in Peter’s case, despite having served at Christ’s side for three and a half years, his conversion was not completed until after Christ’s ascension; for even during the 40 days after Christ’s resurrection, Peter questioned Jesus about what He was going to do as He walked away with John. Perhaps envy there, for John was the beloved Apostle. Typically, Peter could not keep his mouth shut when he should.

I Peter 5:10, paraphrased, sheds light on when we become fully converted, “God of all grace has called us to share His eternal glory by Christ Jesus; so that, after you have suffered for a while, you will be made perfect, strongly established in God’s Word, and you become mature; which is to say unshakable.” (see “Grace: Times Seven“) Do not be misled into thinking that suffering stops after becoming fully converted. It does not and will not, until Christ returns. During these “end of days,” it steadily worsens: many of you are aware of this occurring to Truth Speaker BonnieQ.

Those who speak true for God and Christ always will suffer. This passage tells us that, after we’ve suffered for a while, we will become stronger through it and will find it much easier thereafter to get through Satan’s continued torment. Satan is relentless when it comes to God’s people, especially in these end days; for he is now in a desperate rage, all of which is directed at infant converts, who are the most vulnerable due to a lack of knowledge and wisdom, but more so God’s Truth Speakers; he hopes to move them but he cannot, for it is impossible.

The lesson “From Adversities to Blessings” revealed that God allows adversity as a measure of our level of righteousness and so we can come to understand there is nothing and no one greater than God; which directly relates to “after you have suffered for a while.” Ephesians 4:15 describes this process as “growing into Christ’s righteousness.”

A new “born again” Christian often is referred to scripturally as an “infant, one who drinks milk, not yet ready for solid food.” As any infant must, so a new Christian must learn to sit, to crawl, to speak, and to walk while, ultimately and gradually, solid food is introduced by God’s mature Christians. The milk is comprised of the basics of salvation and steady learning of God’s Wisdoms. Ephesians describes “solid food” as learning “to speak God’s Truth in love.”

The “milk” also represents a period of learning about God and Christ’s love for us; while “solid food” refers to the weightier matters of God’s Word. We cannot hope to speak “Truth in love” until true love is in our hearts and it compels us to absolute obedience; for it is then we understand what is truly LOVE: its depths and breadths and heights. Only godly love within us can speak Truth, no matter what obstacles and persecutions that might and are thrown in our paths.

A mature Christian has no fear of anything man or beast can do to his or her flesh body, does not fear death of the body, does not fear persecution, does not fear Satan’s cruel thorns; does not fear losing a job, does not fear losing material possessions; does not fear anything or anyone except a healthy respect (fear) of God. The mature do experience weariness of the battle, from time to time, but they continue on: for God does provide breaks from earth’s ongoing spiritual war steadily worsening in these “end of days.”

A mature Christian rejoices in all things, good or bad, and is bold in speaking God’s Truth to all who will hear and obey; despite persecution and thorns in our sides. Alas, too many people have not been taught these things from their favored pulpits; thus, far too many turn away from God when temptations and/or adversities or the cares of this world come upon them, especially painful adversities: physical and/or emotional. Worse, they remain among the harlot daughters because it feels comfortable, safer, the people therein more important that God and His Son. Alas, it is a road paved with utter destruction.

Why turn away? Because these infants have been led to believe their life instantly will be better, happier, more peaceful and, certainly, more financially prosperous after accepting Christ. If it is not, they then are told it is because they either do not believe or they have no faith or both or they are not fully following man’s doctrine. Two of the worst lying accusations being flung at new Christians are, “The poor do not have God” and, “You are dead to the Law because God knows you cannot obey it.” What a crock! God said it was the ordinances that were impossible to maintain and it was only the ordinance of sacrifice and oblations that hung on the cross: deleted from the books, as it were.

Deep in their core, infants fear Satan’s cruelty; especially if they witness a mature, bold disciple suffer thorns as well as persecution from those who appear to be Christian brothers and sisters or even family members. They do not understand they are not subjected to anything unusual to Christ’s sheep, as noted in I Peter 4:12-19 and 5:6-9. Even Jesus was tempted and suffered adversities, as were His Apostles. Christ suffered for us and the Word says we WILL suffer for Him, IF we truly love and obey.

Sadly, “don’t rock the boat” is what these infants learn very quickly, while being encouraged to cling to smooth words spewing from their chosen denominational pulpits urging them to rapidly adhere to “man’s commandments and traditions” instead of God’s; clearly not recognizing that their approval is coming from Satan, not God. Therefore, they have not the power of God upon them, nor both the mind and heart of Christ.

Unfortunately, and while they do not realize they have chosen death instead of life, their current life seems to improve when they do as man directs: for Satan does not torment those who bow to his desire, which lust is that they continue in sin while declaring love for God and man. The base of his craving is our total death, both body and spirit; and, the best way to assure that our spirit man dies is to con us into believing that we don’t have to concern ourselves with obeying God’s Doctrine, His Statutes of Life.

If every infant were taught God’s Truth from the very beginning, their chances of becoming mature in God’s Word would be greater; for there is no escaping the fact that a person can deal with what they know and understand but will run from what they do not comprehend. As noted above, “My people perish for lack of knowledge.” Notice that it says, “MY people.” God is not speaking to the whole world, only to those who profess belief but do not obey, are not wholly converted, not totally armored. Corporate Christendom must and will, in the end, take all responsibility for its followers’ lack of knowledge: annihilation along with their goats.

As Jesus said, they “are like white tombs, beautiful on the outside but full of dead men’s bones.” Corporate Christendom will have the blood of their goats on their own hands; for as God said, “Satan slays his own.” In other words, when those followers are cast into the pit of fire and brimstone with Satan, it will be for his lies they followed. The urgency among the great whore and her harlot daughters is now, “Don’t leave the church, despite its problems! Stay and love. . .” They may as well say, “Stay and die with us.”

“Study to show yourself approved by God” (see “How to Study God’s Word“). This is the first requirement of an infant, yet the vast majority listen to pulpit speakers then go home and wait until the next week to “hear” a tiny bit again; or, they solely rely on evangelical television, which is just as misleading and teaches the same lies for God. Therefore, the infant also is responsible for his or her own lack of knowledge; IF he or she opts to take only the word of whomever stands in a pulpit to preach or shouts from their television screen. To do so is to choose death, wittingly or unwittingly.

There is more revealed in Christ’s statement to Peter regarding Satan’s desire to devour him: it verifies Satan’s existence and that he does tamper with our lives and thoughts: he tempts, torments, inflicts cruelty through other humans’ actions or directly by attacking our bodies with illnesses and diseases and planting errant thoughts in our minds.

Unfortunately, many Christians believe Satan does not exist and, as such, has no control over their lives. Such belief is dangerous; first, in that it denies God’s Word about Satan; and, second, because the person is unwittingly giving their control over to Satan by merely denying his existence and power to deceive as well as harm. Only by recognizing Satan and his myriad tricks can we take control over him, thus control our life choices.

Satan operates in a catch-22 method and that really is to his liking: if we follow after man’s commandments and traditions we unwittingly have chosen death; if we do not study to show ourselves approved, we knowingly have chosen death; if we turn away from God and Christ altogether, we boldly have chosen death. In any case, Satan is laughing all the way to God’s pit of fire and brimstone and will drag us in with him: because it does not matter how we made the choice, our actions reveal our choice.

There is so much to learn about God and Christ in order to come to really know them both, so much wisdom and knowledge to gain; but, only if one willingly chooses to learn from those truly mature in God’s Word, which does not mean those trained by man’s seminaries and/or theologians; both teaching man’s commandments and traditions: lies in God’s name. It means those who continue to “study to show themselves approved,” who suffered for a while and became strong in God’s wisdom and knowledge, thus still are suffering for Christ; those who encourage infants to “study to show themselves approved” and teach them how to do it, as set out in “How to Study God’s Word.“

How can anyone make wise choices if he or she is not willing to study in order to confirm what he or she is being taught by another? Refusing to study, grow and confirm is to willingly choose death over eternal life. It is to be considered dead in this life and to be deemed twice dead forever. To refuse to study also denies the Holy Spirit as our guide, a form of unforgivable blasphemy. Satan gets a chuckle out of this one at our expense.

Is this temporary life really worth such a sacrifice to Satan? The Destroyer can attack only our mind and flesh, his goal being to influence the spirit man within to sin against God: the New Testament clearly tells us that sin is to violate God’s Ten Statutes, and that no such person will ever enter heaven’s gates. God, on the other hand, can destroy both the flesh and spirit man within. Better to fear thus obey God than to fear what the Waster can and will do to us in this life. Get a clue! This life is TEMPORARY.

In John 6:63 Jesus said, “There is no profit in the flesh.” Paul noted, about having Jesus in our lives, “You ought to be able to control your flesh.” As explained in “The Mind of Christ,” as true believers we DO control our body’s actions and our mind’s thoughts and the words from our mouths— by the choices we make, choices based on action.

Study to show yourself that God has approved you for Christ’s kingdom and study to become fully converted: for the reward is eternal life in paradise.

—— So saith the Spirit, “As Daniel knew 2 years before the Jews’ captivity would end, so ye know 2 years before earth’s end.” By the Spirit, the sheep have been told, “Christ will come as early as mid-October to early-November 2009 or 2010 but no later than those same months in 2011.” Jesus has been allowed a bit of time to tarry, IF need be. Be sure to read the two SPECIAL broadcasts Extra Oil Update 20A and 20B for a sneak peek at the seventh plague: due in full force behind Jesus as He crosses our skies.

Partial silence has begun, as spoken of previously; thus, the precise year will be known when utter silence extends for 7.5 days (prophetic “half an hour”). Listen, little sheep, listen with your spiritual ears, and watch the clouds with your spiritual eyes. Time is of the essence. If not fully converted, time is no longer your friend; for total conversion in this age must be instant, this day, today: do not delay.

——Pray for all international leaders and their peoples; pray for the goats, asking our Father to forgive those who do not “come out of her to become fully converted sheep, for they know not what they do or to whom they do it.” KNOW WITH CERTAINTY: NEITHER GOD’S FEW PROPHETS NOR ANY OF CHRIST’S SHEEP EVER BRING HARM UPON ANY CREATURE, INCLUDING MAN, INSTEAD CHOOSING FORGIVENESS AND DEATH OF SELF in exchange for everlasting life as exemplified by our Saviour Christ.

Little Sheep, be watchful, as I watch and continue watching; continue standing fast, even if facing death. We are greatly outnumbered but completely assured WE HAVE GOD’S POWER: they have no strength, only the ability to harm your flesh but never your spirit being! KEEP WALKING and TALKING, even when it feels useless: in the blink of an eye you might snatch one lost sheep from God’s fiery wrath.

Earth staggers with Christ’s closed invitation to only the “lukewarm and cold”— the former knows Truth but in some way are not living and/or speaking it. The Cold seek warmth of Truth and come to it the instant heard or read. Dear Sheep, live and speak ALL of God’s Truth: that is the warmth sought by the cold, whom God never said He would spew out of His mouth: “I wish that you were hot or cold, but since you are lukewarm I shall destroy you.” Why not the cold? Because He knows the Cold are seeking His Truth and, while patiently waiting for His speakers, they obey all that they do know and understand. So saith the Lord, “Ye lukewarm await consuming fire.”

Quickly— after all, a year or two is not much time— Jesus will come through earth’s door upon the clouds with a host of His angels. He brings with Him the decrees of innocent or guilty. His Sheep maintain extra oil by total obedience, unwavering faith and being watchmen of the signs and plagues— our Groom is close by.
