This book will forever remind me of the power of word of mouth. I can remember picking up The Shack in Lifeway Christian Store, reading the back cover, and sitting the book back down to go in search for others I thought I’d like better. At the time, I thought the book sounded interesting, but for some reason I never felt moved to buy the book.
A year later I heard “buzz” about the book from people talking and blogging about the story premise, the writing etc. As controversy brewed I found myself more interested in reading the novel just to see what in the tarnation the fuss was all about. I went to the store and bought the book, but guess what? I never read it. Months came and went, but still I hadn’t touched the book. Long story short, I ended up giving away my printed copy and decided to download the book on iTunes.
Holy Jumpin’ Jack Flash! I love this book. The story was so engaging that it almost seemed like a true account. And, on top of the great story, the narrator, Roger Mueller, did a fabulous job. This book made me think about God in a completely different way. In fact, I found myself feeling more relaxed in my relationship with my Creator.
Many of you probably already know this, but The Shack has made many best seller lists. In 2008 it was #7 on the list of 50 top selling books in the United States, per examiner.com.
Here is the back cover blurb in case you’re interested in checking it out.
Mackenzie Allen Phillips’s youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later, in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mach received a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend.
Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack’s world forever.
In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant THE SHACK wrestles with the timeless question: Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain? The answers Mack gets will astound you and perhaps transform you as much as it did him. You’ll want everyone you know to read this book!
